In 1795, the fortress was leased in perpetuity to the Moro family by the Royal Domain, and later in the 19th century, it passed to the Massari, Teti, and Dr. Gustavo de Luca, who added residential buildings on the eastern side, hosting notable figures such as the painter Francesco Paolo Michetti and the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. At the beginning of the last century, the castle passed into the ownership of the Nigro family and then the Bernabeo family.
The fortress was severely damaged by bombings during the winter of 1943-44; in 1946, the entire eastern part of the structure collapsed into the sea due to hillside erosion. Currently, the castle is owned by the Municipality of Ortona. About two-thirds of the original pentagonal-shaped structure remain. The residential buildings erected in the first half of the 19th century were destroyed by bombings and were not rebuilt during the restoration phase.
