The capital of Norway has its own charm, like all the countries in Scandinavia. The Oslo Pass allows you to visit attractions at discounted prices. But is it really worth it?

Oslo Pass: Is It Really Worth Getting One? What Are the Costs?

The first thought before embarking on a journey is, "What can I visit in the time I have available? How much will museum and major attraction admissions cost?" In some cases, in larger cities, there are special cards available. They allow free entry to certain types of attractions (museums, palaces, etc.), and in some countries, they even allow you to travel for free on public transportation! Yes, you heard it right, they're genuine passes to roam freely within the city of choice without paying for transportation (sometimes) or admissions, and you can even skip the kilometers-long lines outside the main points of interest.

But what do they cost? How do they work?

In this brief article, I'll talk about the Oslo Pass, the capital of Norway and a charming place in Northern Europe, trying to best explain whether the expense is worth it or not.

Cost

Comparing the price to other cities, the Oslo Pass has a fairly high cost. This is because the cost of living throughout Scandinavia is generally high. Below is the table with price ranges in both Norwegian Kroner (also known as NOK) and Euros. Prices can vary based on the stock market.

Free Admissions

Below is a list of structures accessible for free with the Oslo Pass. Just show the pass at the designated offices to gain access. In some places, you might have to go through a metal detector for security reasons.

Free Transportation

The Oslo Pass also provides some advantages related to transportation.

  1. Night Buses: Night bus lines operate only from 1:00 AM to 4:00 AM on the nights between Friday and Saturday, and Saturday and Sunday. The Oslo Pass can be used on night buses in Oslo/Zone 1 and 2.
  2. Ferries: The Oslo Pass is valid on ferries to Bygdøy, the islands of the Oslo Fjord, and Nesodden.
  3. Drøbak: Please note that the Oslo Pass is only valid for bus transport to Drøbak, but not for the boat. This is because the pier and the bus stop in Drøbak are in two different zones.
  4. Transport to and from Oslo Gardermoen: The Oslo Pass is not valid for transport to and from Oslo Gardermoen Airport, as the airport is outside Zone 2, the limit of the pass's validity. Note: The Flytoget express train and the Flybussen shuttle are NOT included in the Oslo Pass. Torp and Rygge airports are outside Oslo and cannot be reached using local transportation. 5. Tusenfryd: The shuttle to the TusenFryd amusement park (bus 500) is included in the Oslo Pass.

Final Thoughts

Considering that the entrance fees to major attractions are quite expensive, is it worth purchasing the pass or not? The answer is: "it depends." Personally, I purchased the one-day pass. I started in the morning at 8:00 AM from the Central Station and set out to visit as many attractions as possible (mostly on foot since the points of interest were all close to each other, or nearly so). If you're a traveler who wants to fully experience the emotion of standing in front of a Munch painting, admiring it, and gazing at it for hours, the answer to the initial question can only be no... This is because the individual museum entrance fee would cost around €13 for adults.

I managed to visit 8 attractions in one day. So, if you enjoy walking, photographing everything you come across, and want to visit as many places as possible, the answer is definitely yes! The cost is high, as mentioned, but it's absolutely worth it, even to avoid the endless lines that form inside the museums.
